On the night of 27 June 1973, the last moment of democracy in Uruguay took place in the Palacio Legislativo in Montevideo: President Juan María Bordaberry Arocena dissolved Parliament and tanks invaded the city streets. The path to dictatorship, common to other South American countries, had begun with the economic crisis and high inflation, which had led to a deterioration in living conditions, strikes and demonstrations.
In Uruguay, the journey had begun with President Jorge Pacheco Areco, who came to power in 1967. Until the fateful night of 1973. Aurelio González, photographer for El Popular, was in Parliament. His first thought went to the newspaper's photographic archive. It had to be saved.
