On 26 January, in the community of Uchuraccay, eight journalists from Diario de Marka, El Observador, La República, Oiga and Noticias de Ayacucho (and guide Juan Argumedo) were murdered after they went to cover the news of the death of some Shining Pathists at the hands of members of the Huaychao and Macabamba communities. These communities had received instructions from the Armed Forces to refuse the presence of the 'Sendero Luminoso' SLs who had assassinated Alejandro Huamán, president of the Uchuraccay community. It was in this context that, as the journalists appeared, the villagers were prepared for reprisals by the SL, the confusing events occurred that ended with the massacre of the journalists by the peasants. Given the public outcry caused by the news of the events, the government appointed a Commission of Inquiry chaired by Mario Vargas Llosa.
