This book was the catalogue of the exhibition held in Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni to commemorate and document the 40th anniversary of the promising season of the Prague Spring and its tragic conclusion with the armed invasion in August 1968 and the beginning of the so-called ‘normalisation’ in early 1969. The exhibition recounts the political and social changes that took place in the space of a year, from one spring to the next, also from an Italian perspective. In Italy, the events in Czechoslovakia had a specific echo that was reflected among other things in a crisis of the left. The exhibition, like the book, evokes the historical events and civil participation with documentary and artistic photographic images; it traces the portrait of the protagonists; it presents testimonies, photographs, posters, flyers and documents from public archives (e.g. the State Archives of the Czech Republic, the Library-Museum Prohibiti Books, Czech regional archives, the archives of the University of Bologna, the archives of the Na zábradlí Theatre) and private archives, some of which are on public display for the first time.
