The magazine O seculo Illustrado played an important role in Portugal during the period it was published, from 1938 to 1989. The magazine tackled new and humanist issues, such as racism, poverty, the plight of children, child labor, and the social position of women. Along with the invisibility of colonial war news, Eduardo Gageiro's photoreports and Maria Antonia Palla's 1963 reportages heralded this new era, inviting a radical look at the living conditions of excluded and vulnerable groups.
It would be in this May 1, 1974 issue that Eduardo Gargeiro's photos would tell us about the incredible Portuguese days.
