Founder and general secretary of the Gabonese Democratic Party, in November 1967 he succeeded Léon M'ba as president of the Republic upon the latter's death, and was reelected in 1973, 1979, 1986, 1993, 1998, and 2005. He maintained a conservative and authoritarian policy domestically, pro-Western and allied with France internationally. In the early 1990s, he initiated a controversial democratization process in the country that led to the abolition of the one-party system and enabled him to win the first multi-party presidential election in 1993.
