On the night of August 20-21, 1968, Soviet tanks entered the Czechoslovak capital and ended the Prague Spring. Twelve years after the bloody crackdown in Hungary, Warsaw Pact troops stifled the attempt made by Alexander Dubceck to reform the communist regime from within.
Socialism with a human face, as it was called, included the recognition of political, cultural and trade union freedoms, the separation of party and government, and equality among the country's different ethnic components. Workers were involved in the democratization process through the creation of new instruments of grassroots democracy.
