Today, 19 March, the statue of General Baquedano in Plaza Italia, known as 'ground zero' or Plaza de la Dignidad, was cleaned and repainted, erasing the social slogans that have been present since the demonstrations started in Chile on 18-O. The Inventario Iconoclasta de la Insurrección Chilena (Iconoclastic Inventory of the Chilean Insurrection) records different stages of this continuous process of inscription. It is an archive of images of monuments intervened, modified, demolished and erected, between October 2019 and today, in the territory covered by the State of Chile. The procedure involves crawling images on social networks through various search engines and a simple unification process.
The iconoclastic inventory of the Chilean insurrection is a living archive that promotes, through the appropriation of images circulating on social networks, re-readings and re-significations of the events of political, social and cultural movements in the territory known as Chile, which are challenging the heteronormative, patriarchal and white history. This is happening through demonstrations where statues of heroes have been toppled in several cities, as well as in multiple collective, sensitive and insurrectionary acts, which have reconfigured the popular/plurinational territory so longed for. Spaces of micro-political activation and creative power that make transformation possible.
The present publication is a political and symbolic gesture of profound collaborative militancy, inviting us to think about the propositional and political force of dissidence and of the people on the barren landscape of that fenced-in, silent, guarded and hero-less square(s), modifying the territory in a common reverberation of all those who struggle and resist.
