On November 1, 1954, the Front de Libération Nationale had launched an armed insurrection
against the French colonial power and started what would gradually become a
a bloody and exhausting war of independence that lasted ninety-two months.
The fierce repression, carried out indiscriminately on the entire Algerian population by the French government from the very beginning of the rebellion, led to the gradual development of a political conscience,in ever wider strata of the population, making popular support for the partisans, who in Algerian were called Moudjahid.
