From 27 July to 3 August 1996, the mountainous region of Chiapas in south-eastern Mexico hosted the Intercontinental Meeting for Humanity and Against Neoliberalism, organised by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation under the leadership of Subcomandante Marcos. The meeting brought together 5,000 activists from around the world and 42 national delegations. It gave rise to the declaration known as 'La Realidad', which announced the creation of a non-hierarchical network of international resistance to liberalism, with a communication network of activists to counter the discourse of the dominant media. Photographer Bruno Serralongue went there to document a new form of activism that was emerging. Long unpublished, this project is now the subject of a comprehensive publication and is also an opportunity to explore the place occupied by artists in these alternative movements, which lacked a real or established hierarchy.
