It all started on 8 July. They attacked in the heart of the Navarrese city of Pamplona, in the middle of the San Fermin festival. At the end of the bullfight, without any warning, Commissioner Rubio and about fifty riot police broke into the bullring, with more than 20,000 people stunned by what they were seeing, beating and shooting at the crowd until they cleared the arena full of terrified people. During the demonstrations that spontaneously broke out in the streets of Pamplona, under indiscriminate and brutal repression, German Rodriguez was killed by the bullets of the armed police.
Navarre, Guipuzcoa, Biscay and Alava, all the Basque people rose up to stop the provocation. A single cry, a single unanimous demand ran through the assemblies, demonstrations and rallies: CASTIGO A LOS CULPABLES (PUNISH THE CRIMINALS), ERRUDUNEI ZIGORRA! The more Euskadi was riddled with bullets, the stronger the protest and the brighter the flame of the demand for accountability. A flame that day by day spread to the rest of the peoples of Spain.
