Alfred Nilsen led the People's Action Against the Alta/Kautokeino Watercourse Development, the environmental campaign that brought together more than 20,000 members across the country. The Alta battle was also a battle for the rights of the Sami. The right to land and water, grazing land and the right to self-determination in a separate Sami Parliament. 600 police officers were sent to Alta to suppress the largest environmental struggle in Norwegian history. Even with 1,000 river rescuers at ground zero, no one could oppose such an army of police. The activist was prosecuted and convicted under the sedition clause - according to many a legal farce from the start.
