On 19 August 1991 came the coup d'état: the Soviet people woke up to the TV broadcasting ‘Swan Lake’ from the Bolshoi Theatre, prologue to the announcement that Gorbachev was unable to govern for health reasons. Thus was born the ‘State Committee’, created to save the country from ‘chaos and anarchy’, at least according to the proclamations. Meanwhile, columns of tanks enter Moscow, public meetings are banned and pro-reform newspapers closed. The capital thus went from Gorbachev's changes, which had led to a real political effervescence, to a real occupation.
