Kazemi's narrative is about glances, people and difficulties and I find it interesting that traveling with him is his wife Catalina Gomez Angel a parallel support and vision, here is her account:
“There was hope among those celebrating the end of the war” and the end of airstrikes on southern regions. “Some were outraged at the way President Ashraf Ghani had left the country, others were happy that the Americans had left...There was a lot of disillusionment, despair, fear, exhaustion, anguish, a sense of having been betrayed, and, above all, a lot of sadness, though not always for the same reasons.” And again, the despair of those who had counted on the Panjshir fighters as the last front of resistance. And “the sadness of hundreds of families fleeing the war, who are now in terrible conditions, living in tents, without any help,” as many international organizations have suspended their activities. The displaced were left to their fate, with a government that neither knew how to govern nor had the resources to do so, as the country's funds were frozen abroad, precipitating the economic crisis.
And then the sadness of the journalists who had lost their jobs due to the closure of the media they worked for, and were now facing arrest and violence in prison. And the despair from which the women were trying not to be overwhelmed, who had been ousted from their jobs overnight, and on whom new clothing obligations were being imposed: not only the mandatory blue burqa in the 1990s but also, a significant novelty for Afghanistan, the abaya and black niqab that we usually associate with Gulf Arab countries and the wives of Isis jihadists.
