“Photography took on a particular significance in this period of our history,” write the South African photographers whose testimony to popular resistance against the apartheid regime is collected in this book. “The camera became a voice for those denied a vote and basic human rights, and was instrumental in bringing the South African struggle to the international arena.”
The title, “Beyond the Barricades,” carries at least two meanings. The authors’ intention is to take the reader beyond the barricades “that keep most of the media from the heart of the conflict,” but the book also expresses hope for change, for a life “beyond the barricades.”
From Los AngelesTimes
The book presents eloquent and searing testimony of the communal struggle for freedom as witnessed and expressed by South Africans. Their words and images take us beyond the barricades that keep most of the media from the heart of the conflict.
Beyond the Barricades provides an in-depth look at the complex issue surronding the conflict in this racially divided society.
